Hi, I'm Dave Ward from the Ward Law Firm and we protect business owners facing divorce. As any divorce case goes on and this is actually true of any civil case, but divorces in particular, one of the things that people hear thrown around a lot is the word discovery. But if you're not an attorney, that doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot to you. What I'm going to do in this video series is talk to you about discovery, what it is, and some of the tools that are available for it.
In this first video, what I'm going to be talking about are something called interrogatories. Interrogatories are written questions that you submit to your spouse and they are required under the law to file written responses that are sworn to under oath. In other words, they have to give you answers that subject them to the penalties of perjury. This is mostly frequently done by attaching an affidavit verifying that all the information that I've written in this response is true and accurate to the best of my knowledge. That's what interrogatories are.
In terms of the big picture of where it fits into discovery, interrogatories really are at the core because this is where you're going to get a tremendous amount of the information that you need and it's an easy way to get that without having to go through other more costly mechanisms, some of which we'll talk about in later videos.
